Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a non-destructive process that can effectively detect flaws within precision cast parts. It directs a beam of high-frequency mechanical vibrations (ultrasonic sound waves) at the casting. Where no flaws exist, the waves pass through the casting undisrupted. If there is a flaw, waves will be reflected back and detected by a specialized instrument. The energy of the reflected waves and other factors enable skilled technicians to precisely identify the size, location, shape and other information about the flaw. This is especially useful in large castings. In addition to detecting flaws such as porosity, inclusions, voids and cracks, UT can also detect wall dimensions and more. It is effective with both ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
