During the investment casting process, shrinkage occurs, which must be anticipated and taken into account. Accurate casting dimensions can be determined from numerical simulations of heat transfer and deformation phenomena. The accuracy of the simulation depends upon the heat transfer results. Shell material, alloy composition, airflow near the mold surface and other factors must be considered. When carefully executed, these simulations produce excellent results.
